ccna exam and MCSE practice exams

I am guessing that you have now worn out your ccna study guide or mcse study guide, the spine is well broken in and you are ready to test yourself. This is not one of those ccna 640 607 brain dump sites, just a place where you can use my free ccna practice test to brush up on a cisco ccna test question or 2 before you take the real 640 607 ccna exam. These questions are retention based, so if you are looking for scenario or problem solving questions, I suggest you buy something like the ccna testking, the boson ccna exam or the ccna exam by Transcender which I have used myself for both the 640 607 ccna exam and the CCNP exam. I wrote these back when I did the 640 607 CCNA exam but the material is still relevant to the latest 640 801 CCNA exam.

Use Transcender and save time studying!

I'll bet you read the latest on Cisco replacing the CCNA EXAM with the latest iteration of materials with the new 640 801 ccna or 640 811 ccna exam. They seem to have modified the content with a focus on security and encryption. They have decided to include content on VPN which is not a bad thing at all since companies are actively trying to leverage their existing internet links rather than pay for expensive Frame-Relay or PRI lines and per call rates for remote access. SAN is becoming popular due to the massive amount of data in the workplace that can't remain on server hard disks forever, it needs to be offloaded somewhere but remain accessible at the same time. Stay tuned to my quiz site because I will be writing amendments to these CCNA exams to include the additional materials.

Don't get stuck on CCNA exam study material specific to the 640 801. The basics are the same for previous CCNA exams, for example the OSI model hasn't changed and likely won't, so the bulk of the 640 607 CCNA exam study content is still relevent.

Some tips on study guides...

From personal experience I found the CCNA study guide books that best focus on the test objectives are the series written by Todd Lammle, while the CCNA study guides that will best help you understand the Cisco specific technology are the Cisco Press books. I have used both, and both are available at Amazon.com in both new and used. One advantage to buying Todd Lammle's books is, if you have a question about the material, and you send him an email, he will usually respond with an expansive answer. He has responded to my questions before. Your decision on which CCNA study guide to buy has more to do with you than with the books. If you have Cisco routing and switching experience and just want to pass the exam, Todd Lammle's books are the best. If you are short on experience, the Cisco Press books will give you more food for thought to help you understand device and protocol behaviours.

And the survey says...

It's time to start writing more content related to Cisco routing and switching. Drop me a line with your wish list items so I can find out what you would like to see the most.

25 ccna test questions each

  • The OSI layers Please Do Not Throw Sausage Pizza Away. The 640 607 ccna exam will test you on your awareness of all 7 osi layers and the purpose of each from the physical layer up to the application layer. You will need to understand at which OSI layer that each protocol operates in order to pass the ccna exam. Pay particular attention to the function of each OSI layer for example framing and physical addressing occuring at the data link layer or OSI layer 2, and logical network addressing occuring at the network layer or OSI layer 3.
  • Switching Technologies This will help you understand how switching is so much faster than routing and how osi layer 3 information is both used to switch traffic and keep VLAN information from one VLAN separate from another as it traverses the switch fabric. Rest easy though, the 640 607 ccna exam is not as tough on you with this as it is with the CCNP exam.
  • IP Addressing This dot these dot those dot that. You want to understand the hierarchy of dotted decimal numbers and how the internet was designed around them. The classful and private IP address ranges are essential knowledge as well to pass the ccna exam.
  • Router and CLI basics This is where the 640 607 ccna exam is concerned with your familiarity with the Cisco router architecture, navigating the router components such as the interfaces, which commands apply to each, and configuration modes. This is where you will find hands on experience in a ccna lab would come in handy.
  • IP Routing Time to test your knowledge of understanding how routing protocols determine the best route to a destination network. The 640 607 ccna exam is going to test you on mostly classful routing protocols so you won't have to sweat the stuff like OSPF, BGP and EIGRP until you get to the CCNP exam.
  • VLANs Virtual Local Area Networks. The 640 607 ccna exam is going to test you on your understanding of how VLANs take advantage of both OSI layer 2 and OSI layer 3 properties to create isolated or descreet subnetworks to contain traffic. This has security implications too, gives you the ability to localize services to a subnetwork, and also routing for VLANs requires you to understand a handfull of other protocols specific to client/server communications such as DHCP, DNS, as well as proprietary applications.
  • IPX routing IPX SPX? You mean people still use it? That's right, at one time Novell Netware had the lions share of the NOS server market, and in some businesses, and entire countries they still have a major presence. IPX really is a brilliant protocol once you understand it, it was designed for a minimum of administrative overhead although your network pays a performance price for that simplicity.
  • WANS Networks need to be connected together across boundary lines spanning city blocks, suburbs, cities and even countries. Media types differ depending on the distance covered, the type of reliability needed and the cost. The 640 607 ccna exam is going to test you on these too. Common WAN protocols are ATM, frame-relay, ISDN and even analog dial services such as x25 and POTS.
  • Ethernet and Cisco Layers Although the most common Ethernet frame type in use in America today supports the SNAP sublayers, there are still a fair amount of others still in use, mostly in other countries. Interestingly enough a lot of other countries are much further ahead in the availability of broadband. In order to pass the 640 607 ccna exam you will need to know them all. You will see other protocols make use of the SNAP sublayers too, such as ATM.
  • The DOD model and protocols The origins of the internet! If you like history and technical trivia this section will be easy for you.
  • Subnetting OUCH! This stuff has failed many ccna exam takers. The 640 607 ccna exam is going to test your understanding how to apply the powers of 2 to the number of bits in the network and host portions of an IP address to calculate the number of hosts and subnets. This knowledge would be the basics of network design. Some people struggle with this one, especially if this is their first introduction to classless subnet masking.
  • Router Configuration Basics With so many different router models in circulation, navigating the interface types can be intimidating.
  • RIP and IGRP Distance Vector and Update timers from hell! aaaaaggggghhhhhh! That sounds complicated. You had better remember the table of administrative distances because your ccna exam is going to quiz you on them.
  • Router Components & Maintenance Some people really like this topic especially if they are hardware geeks. For others it was a major feat just to stay awake through this chapter in the ccna study guide
  • Access Lists Here is a section with a lot of dry details to remember as well. The 640 607 ccna exam will test you on your knowledge of access-list number ranges and which protocol they apply to. Inverted subnet masks may throw you off a bit too.
  • ISDN This will be the bain of your existence as a Cisco technician. It has been around for a long time and most of the real pro's who understand it at the telco level have retired, leaving it to the ones who never really had the training on it because the telcos are trying to phase it out. You will get your fair share of experience using DEBUG if you have to support ISDN. You may like sifting through all that output though.
  • Gathering information Troubleshooting a problem or trying to get a device on the network relies on your ability to gather information on a neighboring device, or getting into that neighboring device to check on or verify it's configuration. You will need to be proficient in using numerous commands such as IOS navigation commands that allow you to connect to one or more devices, the show commands such as show cdp neighbor, and understanding the output of those IOS commands.

Windows NT Exams

Ya, I know this Windows NT stuff is old hat, but the technologies are still the same, only the operating system has changed. I wrote these a few years ago and leave them here for historical purposes. The page design is different because they were put together on a different web site I had with an entirely different look. They still work though.

My disclaimer

These exams are not intended in any way to be an authoritative reference to the materials covered. Windows NT is a registered trade name of Microsoft. The actual questions are my own and were not copied from any course materials, books or software programs. Any similarities are purely coincidence. I will not be held responsible for any errors on, or failures of the real exams administered through an authorized testing center. These exams are put here for skill testing and amusement purposes only. Use at your own risk.
